What is Corpus Christi?

This Catholic celebration dates from 13th century. In order state the presence of "Chirst in evertythin" on the consecrated bread, Pope Urban IV instituted the Corpus Chirsti on 11th August, 1264.

In many Brazilian towns people decorated the streets with ephemeral tapestries made of sawdust, coffee and grains which depict Biblical passages on the way where the religious procession will pass. The main feature of the Corpus Christi festivity is the procession.

Tapestries usually represent Jesus, the Holy Chalice and other Eucharistic motifs. In Paraty, a national historic monument, the Corpus Chisti celebration is observed with the entire traditional liturgy, and it´s a lively cultural event really worth witnessing.
